| The Basilica of S. Maria Assunta is without doubt the most
important church in Castel di Sangro. It stands in a dominant position on the high part of
the town, and is clearly visible from afar as one enters the town. The present building was built by Francesco Ferradini at the end of the 17th Century, but its origins go back much further to the second half of the 10th Century. The building has 3 naves with a preserved section of the 14th Century loggia. In 1655 the church was demolished as it was considered too small, the rebuilding completeted on 21st September 1725. The clock and the large door particularly catch the eye, surrounded by sculptures of saints above which stands the town emblem. Inside the church one can admire the paintings of great value, a wooden choir, an ancient pulpit and a bronze sculpture representing the baptism of Christ. |

The De Petra Palace, commonly known as the Palace of the Lion
dates back to the 13th Century. Characteristic of the building are the beautiful stone
"bifore", below which can be seen several reliefs and the heraldic emblem of the
lion. Unfortunately the building shows the traces of damage caused by the fire of 1647 and the wooden ceiling is in poor condition. |
| Walking into the courtyard we find the 12th or 13th century sculpture representing the lion, the symbol of the DePetra family. | ![]() |
